CDC Epidemiology Textbook.

Next meeting will be next Saturday October 31st. Please try to arrive at 12:20-12:25pm. We need a full hour, but we need to spot on time as some students have other events after Disease Detective.
Please review the handout, I sent out last week, we will have a test on that handout. Read the glossary attached to this email. We will discuss it in class.

If you are interested in more information about epidemiology, the CDC has an excellent free textbook online. It can be downloaded at http://www.ihs.gov/MedicalPrograms/PortlandInjury/PDFs/PrinciplesOfEpidemiologyInPublicHealthPractice.pdf.
Chapter 1 is a good introduction to epidemiology. You can skip Chapter 2, you should already know what a histogram is from Math classes. Chapter 3 it is the most important, it review how to calculate risk, morbidity and mortality. Each year there are several questions on this topic in the regional and state competition. You do not need Chapter 4. Chapter 5 and 6 have more detail that you need but give you a good idea about surveillance and how to investigate an outbreak. The glossary at the end of the book it is very useful to learn the terminology we will be using. We will review some of the terms during our meetings.
